Roberto Clemente batted .317 for his career with exactly 3,000 hits. He is the all time Pittsburgh Pirates leader with 9,454 at bats, 4,492 total bases and 2,433 games.Roberto won 12 Gold Gloves and four Batting titles(1961, 1964, 1965, 1967). The Great One was named the National League's Most Valuable Player in 1966. He was voted the Babe Ruth Award in 1971 and also the 1971 World Series MVP. On December 31, 1971, Roberto was on his way to Nicaragua to deliver relief supplies for earth quake victims. His plane crashed into the ocean off Puerto Rico and he was gone. The Pirate retired Roberto's number 21 in the spring of 1973. The five year waiting period was waived for his induction into Baseball's Hall of Fame, also in 1973. Roberto Clemente was my childhood baseball hero. He still is.
