Rocky Mount Phillies

In 1975, I had the privilege of playing minor league baseball in the Philadelphia Phillies minor leagues.

That season, I was promoted to high class A ball in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Our Rocky Mount Phillies won the Carolina League that season. My strongest memory is the next to last game of the season. We won that game 18-3 over the Winston-Salem Red Sox.

I had only been with Rocky Mount for a few days before this game but managed to hit two triples that night.

At the time, I had no idea about the rich baseball history of Municipal Stadium in Rocky Mount. Jim Thorpe played there as well as Buck Leonard, the famous Negro Leagues player.

Also unknown to me was a fan by the name of Leverett T. Smith. He was at that game way back in 1975 and wrote an outstanding article about Rocky Mount, including our pounding of the Red Sox that hot august night way back in 1975.
